Feb the 6 1840 british governor william hobson and about 40 maori chiefs signed the treaty of waitangi.a further 500 chiefs signed it by the end of the year at that there were 80,000 maori in aotearoa and only 2000 europeans.the chiefs to sell and to the crown at prices to be agreed case by case.the third and final clause gave maori the same rights
By 1869 the number of british settlers in aotearoa had exploded to 700,000.and maori number halved because of war disease and stress.the government obtained south island from the maori.
